QMC 0 v Leyton County 0

No goals so I'll keep this short, although some decent football was played despite the score line. QMC dominated the first half but couldn't find the ruthlessness required in front of goal to beat a decent Leyton 'Keeper and a very strong wind. At the other end the QMC defence looked solid, marshalled by Carl Senior and new recruit Liam Cesay and ably supported by Matt Marshall and Fred 'rolling back the years' Dadzie. Another debutant, Luke Jowers battled tirelessly in midfield alongside Jimmy who once again demonstrated his undoubted class.
The second half saw Leyton create a couple of chances of their own, but debutant Goalkeeper Sam Hayward pulled off two fine saves to deny them. Lee Hosford and Marlon Stuart continued to apply pressure on the Leyton goal, but their defence held firm and their goalkeeper made some good stops. On the one occasion that he was beaten, Marlon saw his cute lob brush the crossbar and sail over. It just wasn't to be.

Egbertians 3 v 2 Queen Mary's

As several players dropped out of the squad at the last moment, things were always going to be tough in this fixture. In a scrappy affair, QM's passing never really got going and mistakes at the back gifted Egbertians an opener. Debutant Liam Cesay hit back with a strike just before half time following a curling cross from Marlon Stuart and cut back by Carl Senior. It meant that the teams went in level at half-time and the goal capped an impressive debut by Cesay junior. The second half was much like the first, mistakes at the back and a lack of incisive passing play from QM allowed the oppo to score not once, but twice before a late reply from another debutant, Leo. This was a bad day for QM and many questions have been asked by Cpt. Wilko regarding the committment of the players following this display and the absence of some key personnel. Two positives came out of this fixture however in the form of Liam and Leo who will be useful additions to the squad and the best test is to see how the team responds to this setback.

Goals: Cesay, Leo
MOM: Liam Cesay

HSBC 5 v 3 QMC (AET - 90 mins = 3-3)

An experimental 3-5-2 formation in the first half saw QMC go into the break 2-0 down. A tricky left winger had scored on the break for HSBC and a penalty awarded after Tom Dennis handled had looked more like ball to hand than deliberate, but James Brennan was given no chance with the spot kick. This QMC team is nothing if not a democracy and after discussions and a quick poll at half time QMC reverted to a more fluid 4-4-2 line up and added more attacking flair in the form of Derek Anane and Paul Fisk. The result was instantaneous and QMC pulled a goal back after totally dominating play when Danny Fenner was cleverly put through and slotted past the oncoming keeper. Wave after wave of QMC attack followed with Lee Hosford and Marlon Stuart both going close and Ozman Awad missing an excellent chance when it seemed easier to score. Undettered, QMC continued to press but a lack of concentration at the back combined with an over committment to attack resulted in HSBC netting a third with only 10 minutes of normal time to play. Many teams would have lay down at this stage, but for the 4th game this season, QMC found the strength to net late goals. Danny Fenner netted his second with a penalty after a clear handball brought about by severe QMC pressure. Then, with a minute to go, Marlon was put through on goal and although he still had a lot to do and the angle seemed very tight, he cracked the equaliser with a thunderous strike into the net which left HSBC on their knees.
QMC had probably used up most of their resources getting back into the game and when HSBC netted early on in extra time, it was difficult to come back yet again. QMC were caught napping soon after when HSBC again broke away following QMC pressure and the second goal finished the tie as a contest. The league remains QMC's priority and QMC took at least one thing from this game, 4-4-2 is the future!

Goals: Fenner 2 (1 pen), Stuart
MOM: Lee Hosford. Industrious.

Old Tollingtonians v Queen Mary
Report by Andy 'Jocko' Sheen

It was an uphill task from the start when an under strength Queen Mary's team barely managed to field 11 players. The first half was a scrappy affair with the oppo having the better of the half. However it was QM who took the lead with a break up field and a neat finish from Marlon to take his goal tally to 9 for the season. With some last ditch tackles and good defending QM managed to keep the lead until 2 minutes from half-time when a school boy error by Sheeno gifted the oppo a goal making it 1 - 1 at half time.

Whatever the oppo had at half-time it seemed to work as the second half developed into an outright onslaught on the QM goal. The situation was made worse for QM when 5 minutes into the second half Craig received his second yellow card and QM were forced to play the last 40 minutes with only ten men. The 'Alamo' was to follow and it was only a matter of time before the oppo scored with a neatly taken penalty after their speedy but 'scream like a girl' centre forward was brought down in the penalty area.
With some fine saves from Pete and some hard work in defence the game finished at 2 - 1 and the first defeat of the season.

GOALS: Marlon Stuart
MOM: Marlon Stuart (Different class)

Aldenhamians 3 – 4 QMC
By Mark Curtin

After a scrappy start from both sides, the game started to get a bit heated with a few late tackles and a number of midfield battles drawing the attention of the referee. QM goalkeeper Lee was warned about his elaborate use of the English language and Danny Fenner as usual was constantly having a word in the referee’s ear to remind him that two footed challenges were not actually allowed. The first break through came in the 15th minute after a good ball into the box from Lee to Mark Curtin. Curtin’s shot was blocked by keeper and defender and Paul was on hand to slot away a neat finish and put QM 1 up. The game ebbed and flowed without either side or an individual player stamping any authority onto the game. Then a moment of brilliance from Lee saw QM double their lead just after the half hour mark. A bit of team banter bought about suggestions that Lee’s 20 yard curler into the top corner was actually a cross, but Lee was having none of it and duly took the credit for a fantastic finish. With the constant bellowing of goalkeeper Lee’s instructions ringing in their ears centre backs Carl and Tom put together a solid first half performance that resulted in QM taking their 2 goal advantage into the second half.

The start of the second half saw Aldenhamians level within the first 10 minutes. Two sloppy goals gifted to them after a handling mistake by the Lee and a wayward cross that found the back of the QM net, meant that the impetus was now with the oppo. However, QM dug in and showed great resilience. The game was not following from end to end and for the neutral whilst the quality of the football was not exactly total football, the cup tie was nicely balanced and quite exciting. QM continued to push forward and both Marlon and Lee were working tirelessly to search for a 3rd goal. Then it came, an excellent move started and finished by Danny Fenner. He took possession of the ball on the half way line and played a great pass into Lee, a neat exchange between Lee and Marlon was followed by a ball to Curtin in the centre of midfield, his delicate first time pass over the left back found the advancing Fenner continuing his run from midfield, he controlled the ball with his left and slotted a fantastic low drive across the keeper to restore QM’s lead. Disappointingly, QM let the lead slip almost straight away and another lapse in concentration saw a sloppy goal given away for a third equaliser. With the game in danger of heading to extra time and the early kick off to watch the England game seemingly pointless, a winner was required. With 10 minutes to go an excellent through ball to Marlon bought QM their deserved win. Out sprinting the back four and scuffing a shot past the keeper Marlon scored late on for the second week in a row. The last 10 minutes did not see the expected siege on QM’s goal. Instead some good football, a shot blazed over the bar from Bridges and a couple of other half chances for QM mean that QM saw the game off safely. The only disappointment was another ‘goal’ for Marlon denied after the ref called time just as he had steered the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Goals: Fisk, Hosford, Fenner, Stuart
MOM: Danny Fenner

Queen Mary’s 1 v 1 Old Mincendenians
10 men QM comeback from the dead in dour affair

A first half penalty awarded after a Paul Fisk handball was the only highlight in a fiercely competitive game in which both sides managed to cancel each other out. The QM formation changed 3 times owing to late arrivals because of problems on the central line and it was only after the hour mark that QM started to play. Minchendenians were restricted to a couple of half chances throughout the game, the closest being when Cpt. Wilko cut in front of an opposition forward to intercept, with his clearance only just looping over the crossbar for a corner. QM started to exert their authority in midfield after the break with Jimmy impressing and Carl Senior marshalling the defence to good effect. Marlon and Lee were increasingly causing problems and when Marlon connected with Jimmy's cross from the right, the goalkeeper could only palm the effort onto the post but the referee judged that it had not crossed the line. Another excellent cross from the right was met by Paul, attempting to atone for the penalty, but his header was tipped over by a good save from the opposition keeper who was having a solid game. With the clock running down the game looked to be over when Lee received his marching orders for retaliating after a crunching tackle. But this QM team is made of sterner stuff and with a minute remaining of normal time Carl Senior dissected the defence and put Marlon through on goal to fire into the bottom corner to retain QM's place at the top of the league.

Man of the Match: Carl Senior
Goals: Marlon (89)

Mill Hill County 2 – 2 QMC
By Jimmy Brennan

With optimism brimming in the second team following last weeks 7 – 0 drubbing of Southgate County a hard away trip to the depths of North West London was to follow. With Marlon arriving late a bare but strong eleven took the pitch and battled hard in the first half against a strong and physical Mill Hill. Chances were few and far between in an even first half, Mill Hill passed the ball well but were unable to breach a strong QMC defence marshalled by Dan Fenner and any chance they had was saved by the QMC Keeper. At the other end the skill of Lee and pace of Paul was causing problems among the opposition defence and if not for a blatant handball late on, that may well have seen a sending off in other games, may well have led to a great goal scoring chance. At the other end a last ditch tackle by Sheeno ensured a nil nil score line at half time, unfortunately though the tackle was going to be the last contribution Sheeno made in the game. With Marlon replacing the injured Sheeno at half time and changes in positions QMC started the second half somewhat on the backfoot and soon found themselves two nil down. The first strike from the edge of the box rifled into the bottom corner and the second an inswinging free kick that deceived the QMC goalie and nestled in the top corner. With Jamie making a few changes in positioning QMC soon found themselves on top with Derek and Mark Curtin winning their battles in midfield and Lee and Marlon causing problems everytime we attacked. A surging run and cross by Dan Fenner caused problems in the Mill Hill defence and the ball ended up in the back of the net – though later Paul Fisk claimed to get the decisive touch. QMC were firmly on top know although chances were hard to come by – finally after the ball looped up in the air Paul Fisk was on hand to volley home the equaliser. QMC sensed that with 5 mins to go victory was there for the taking and as attack after attack was spurned it seemed the draw was the likely result. Quick thinking though by Dan Fenner put Marlon clean through from his own half to coolly finish only for the referee to give Marlon offside (Jamie add whatever expletives you wish here!!!). That was not to be the end of it, the Mill Hill striker found himself clean through and but as he tried to round the keeper the ball was smothered well. QMC will be somewhat disappointed at not winning this game after being two nil down but should be happy with the way they pulled the game back against one of the stronger teams in this division.

Queen Mary 2nd's 7 Southgate County 0
By Matt Marshall

In Queen Mary 2nd's first league game of the season they dominated from start to finish. Every player performed well and confidence was brimming throughout the team. QM roared out of the blocks in the first half and the Southgate backline simply couldn't cope with the pace and movement of Marlon and the skilful hold up play of Lee up front. QM soon went 2 up including a neat back header from Lee. Jamie made the point beforehand that our opponents had been promoted last season and would be a good test. However, QM never allowed them a foothold in the game. After a brief flurry from Southgate midway through the first half QM put them back in their place with two more well taken goals. 4-0 up at half time and the game was won. It was left to Jamie to remind everyone to stay focused and make sure of keeping a clean sheet. To be fair to Southgate they started the second half well, but QM's defence dealt with any threat with the minimum of fuss. Our new goalkeeper barely had to make a save. Southgate fell away badly in the last twenty minutes and QM added three more goals to the tally with many more chances being spurned. Special mention should be given to debutants Freddie and Richard in central midfield who gave us the platform to win with their boundless energy and eye for a pass. Ultimately, it was a comfortable performance and there will be much stiffer tests down the line.

Scorers: Marlon (3), Lee (2), Freddie (1) and Richard (1).

MOM: Marlon.
Best moment: His surge down the left channel and into the penalty box before unleashing a sharp rising effort with the outside of his foot into the far top corner. A classy goal.

15.09.07 v Old Slavatorians won 1-0
By Paul Fisk

QM Goals: Joe Bergin
MOM: Marlon Stuart

QM’s final pre-season friendly was an often-scrappy affair as a patched up team missing several big players battled against the odds and were able togrind out a 1-0 win against a physical team from a higher division.

The match started with QM on the back foot. Slavatorians controlled the early going forcing Jimmy Brennan into a fine double save, Despite some clever touches from John Parsons QM found it difficult to create many real clear-cut chances late on in the half Luke Bridges took the ball around the keeper only to be wiped out with a brutal challenge which only earned the Slavs keeper a yellow card which was the first of many baffling descions by the referee.

At Half-time Cpt. Wilko rallied the troops, demanding more effort and reminding the lads that their places would be up for grabs once the season started.

Slavotirans were still on top as the 2nd half began but as the game wore on QM began to look more dangerous with Marlon coming close with an attempted lob and John Fisk having a shot blocked from close range. A series of corners were forced which culminated with Joe rising above his marker to score with a powerful header.

Overall this was a difficult test for QM, a million miles away from the 8-1 victory of a few weeks ago. However they were able to dig deep and show great resolve and can head into the new season with some momentum on the back of a positive result.

01.09.07 Away v UCL (Div 4) won 8 v 1
Match Report by Pete Hall

It’s like watching Brazil!!!
New season new captain new team new start. There is optimism in the air this season. Sergeant Wilko has been busy in the close season recruiting fresh and hungry players to really push for promotion and challenge for the league!

The first of several friendlies to gel the team took place on Saturday 1st Sept with an emphatic 8-1 win away to UCL. Straight from the kick off Queen Mary tempo was that of a Japanese bullet train hurtling across the country at unprecedented speeds. UCL were penned back in their half as the midfield took a strangle hold with crisp passing and Danny Fenner giving the orders as if he was the sergeant major.
Chances soon came Queen Mary’s way with Marlon & Tony running the UCL defence ragged. Luck rather than judgement on UCL‘s part prevented them from going down 1-0 early on. Still the train continued its journey into the opposition box with Sam Shrethran running at the defence from the right wing and delivering a perfect cross, but still UCL managed to hack it away for a corner. Queen Mary’s defence stood tall when UCL did managed one of there very few attacks, with Rob O’Hara towering aerial ability and Andy Jocko Sheen calm and collective ability to play the ball from defence to midfield which set up another attack.

The break through came after 25 minutes with a wonderful passing movement that put through Warren Malthouse and his chip flew past UCL flapping keeper, to cap an impressive start. Confidence was up and the Queen Mary started again but then disaster struck, after all the hard work of going ahead UCL had a lucky break, a seemingly innocent ball through the middle enabled the UCL striker to get beyond the back four and despite the keeper rushing out to close down the angle he managed to place the ball into the empty net. 1-1 and Queen Mary can’t believe it. But after some encouragement from Sergeant Wilko, Queen Mary started again and were rewarded 5 minutes later with another goal easily converted by Tony Ceasy who would go on to score his hatrick.

Then Queen Mary’s pressure really piled on; Tony calmly scored his second and Marlon got onto the score sheet within minutes of this with a simple finish. Half time 4-1 up and the oranges seemed to taste sweater. Another encouraging speech from the sergeant not to let standards drop and changes were made with Dorian replacing Pete in goal and Marcus replacing Matt Marshall who had a reliable first half as he always does.

Second half saw Mark Curtin stamp his authority on the game but he was substituted early on to give an opportunity to John Fisk who was making his debut. Queen Mary continued to dominate possession and was rewarded with a second goal by Marlon who then made way for Paul Fisk to have a run at the defence. Score was now 5-1 and UCL looked beaten, this gave more opportunities for the midfield to drive forward and Danny Fenner was rewarded with a goal which he didn’t really celebrate but tended to give orders to everyone else to get back in position. Tony then completed his hatrick and this was soon followed up with Robbo driving forward in to the box and his shot nearly breaking the net. UCL did manage to create one chance in the second half but Dorian made a good save diving to his left and keeping the ball out.
UCL looked relieved when the final whistle was blown they knew they had been beaten by a superior team, this goes down as an excellent start for the thirds. If they play like this every week, they will have to be moved to the seconds. At times it was like watching Brazil.
