Old Boys 1 vs 3 QM College Graduates ‘07 23/6/2007

The graduates showed the old boys how youth can beat experience in a competitive match which had many promising signs for the season ahead. With both the 1st and 2nd team captains present, everyone was keen to impress.

The old boys started better. The Shaw brothers showed why the 2s have had a great season and the back four launched attack after attack. After 10 minutes, Brooks baffled the defence and set up Phil Johnson who finished confidently.

Disaster struck, however, after 25minutes following a mistimed substitution. The graduates scored at the far post. 1-1. Taka had found the net with the old boys trying to reorganise. His tricky skills had been a danger for a while and the graduates were back in the game.

The 2nd half was a different story. The graduates started passing in a way they hadn’t done at all in the first half. The midfield took control and kept cutting the old boys defence open with through balls and surging runs. 2 goals followed. On 50 minutes a fantastic pass found Taka in the area and he cleverly lobbed the stranded Brennan. The 3rd came after the old boys defence fell asleep defending a corner. Lessons to be learnt here!

From then on, the graduates were in control and made the tired old boys team work hard. Were it not for some fine saves from Jimmy and a denied penalty appeal, the graduates would have extended their lead.

Work needs to be done to sort out the old boys fitness levels for next year. With 8 new players already committing themselves to the team, the competition might just be the incentive that’s needed!

Old Boys Team: Brennan, Scott, Visi, Tor, Bergin, Johnson, Mirza, Woodward, P Shaw, M Shaw, Brooks, Lambert, Stocker, French

UCL 2 – 1 QM 2nd team 8/9/2007

It wasn’t me!

The day started off with a new catch phrase for the 2s, which many will find familiar. Captain Pugwash strolls past the coaches of the Pompey youth team and says “we’ve got 12 with Tony and his mates!” So it was with some optimism that the yellow and blues made their way on to the pitch.

The match started off evenly. Tony and Marlon caused panic among the home team’s defence. Chasing down every ball, the image of a lion chasing down a gazelle seems fitting. QM looked uninspired and Peter Hall kept UCL out with a couple of good saves. Mistakes, however, let the oppo in after 30 minutes. A nameless captain fluffed a routine clearance and a mystery centre back passes the ball to their striker. UCL were one up. Carl looked glum.

Towards the end of the half QM started to get back into the game. Carl Senior started to get forward and looked likely to win balls in the box and the terrible two up front came close on a couple of occasions. It finally dawned on QM that by throwing the ball to Carl, we might actually win a header.

Round 2 and disaster struck on 60 minutes when a phantom club secretary in goal air kicked a back pass and watched the striker pass the ball into the net.

This seemed to stir QM into life. The midfield flew forward. Paul Fisk saw a lot more of the ball down the left and les blues et peche stormed up the pitch with a battle cry from captain Kirk. After one such blitz A UCL player turned to me and said, “Don’t do that again!!” Marlon got us back into the game by neatly lobbing the cat like keeper from the edge of the box.

Chances then came thick and fast. One and ones were missed, the side netting was taking a beating, and headers soared past their target. Still QM stormed forward and didn’t look like tiring. With seconds to go QM came again. 7 or 8 QM players ran most of the pitch for one last attack. Captain America played the ball towards the 6-yard box where an unknown midfielder of Coventry origin blazed the ball over with only the keeper to beat. He shall remain nameless.
